The Research Society autism free india for the Care, Treatment and Training of Children In Need Of Special Care, is one of the oldest and largest not for profit organizations in the country serving children and older individuals with mental challenges and other related disabilities. It has a history of around 66 years and more than 700 students every year are catered in this centre.The school was started by Mr. & Mrs. Hormusjee Vakeel for their daughter Dina who was born with Down’s syndrome.
1. Jai Vakeel School For Children In Need Of Special Care:
Thorough assessment of the child is done at the centre and a report is prepared at the time of admission. Based on the assessment, IQ level, age and ability the children are grouped in 4 sections which include Jai Vakeel Special School, IEP, Learning Readiness Group, NIOS & SAI Autism Center.
Sai Autism Center caters children with Autism Spectrum Disorder who have been diagnosed at the time of assessment. Children below 6 years of age who have not attended any special school earlier are put on individualized therapy which is one-on-one, while children with ASD who have attended previous Autism schools are put in Sai Autism Center. As the child improves and develops necessary academic and functioning level they are then promoted to Jai Vakeel School. Also children with ASD who meet up good academic skills are helped to take up NIOS exams.Home Bound program by Sai Autism Centre is for children who come to the centre from outside Mumbai. Parent and children are provided with accommodation at the center while the child is assessed and individualized report is designed. The report helps teachers & parents to take up necessary steps as per the report at home or at school.
2. Jai Vakeel Vocational Training And Rehabilitation Centre: and Aditya Birla Sheltered Workshop And Rehabilitation Centre:
Vocational training is provided to mentally challenged young adults where they are trained to acquire necessary vocational skills in agarbatti making, paper products, candle and jewellery making, sewing, embroidery, file making, envelope making, etc. On completion of vocational training the trainee is put in competitive or self employment but if they are not capable of this then they are enrolled in sheltered workshop and stipend is paid based on products produced by them.
3. Research Therapy:
The team interacts with the family to know their family background base on which it is decided whether the condition of mental retardation is genetic or is due to any other reason.The level of retardation is determined as low, mild or severe. Psychological tests are carried out. Speech and hearing capabilities are checked.
4. Institutional Care (Residential & Custodial care):
Residential facility is provided to children who come from various part of India & abroad to attend school & vocational sessions. Custodial care is also offered wherein parents deposit certain amount and their child is entitled to live at the institutional care for lifelong.
5. Teacher Training:
Diploma and B.Ed courses in Special Education are offered by Sir Kikabhai Premchand’s Mind’s College Of Special Education B.Ed affiliated to Mumbai University and recognized Rehabilitation council f India.Other activities of The Research Society includes Community Based Rehabilitation & Outreach programme to reach every disabled child even in remote villages.
