The sole aim of ” DAKSHINYA” is to strive for the welfare of the persons with Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Autism and associated Multiple disabilities, by scientifically training them to be self reliant and socially productive, and to transform the dis-ability of mentally retarded children into ability so as to try for their sustainability in the society both economically and socially.More than 274 children are getting exclusively designed special education services with qualified professionals.
1. Day Care Center:
The stages of the classes, running for different mental age groups are classified as Educable, Trainable, Custodial & Care Group. Special education and rehabilitation services at the center includes physiotherapy, speech therapy, yoga, dance, etc.
2. Vocational Training:
Based on the abilities and interests young mentally challenged individuals are trained in vocations like chalk making, candle making, phenyl making, detergent powder making, tailoring, etc. to help them earn their living.
3. Early Intervention:
Center based and home based intervention programmes are designed for children with disabilities in the age range of 0-6 years. This programme is carried out by a team of professionals which include pediatricians, special educators, social workers, speech therapist, development therapist, etc.
4. Residential Facility:
Free boarding and lodging facility is provided to children from in and around Guntur with the help of special educators and care takers. Here the children are taught activities of daily life with the help of special educators like brushing, toileting, eating. etc so that they can take care of themselves.
5. Assessment and training center:
The Institute has a special diagnostic and assessment center consisting of a pool of well qualified professionals, who work together to assess and diagnose individuals according to their impairment, and severity. Apart from this, psychological tests are being conducted to assess the intelligence, self help skills, personal skills, social skills, academic skills, language skills and motor development of the child.Other services at the centre includes parent training for home based intervention, parent and child individual and group counseling, workshops and seminars for teachers, parents, community, general public, etc about identification, assessment and early diagnosis of children with disability.Integration of mentally challenged children in regular schools based on their capability is another major aspect of the center.
