Association for the Mentally Challenged (AMC) is a Non-Governmental autism support centre in Bangalore that supports over 200 mentally challenged children, adolescents and adults and provides them with education, training and rehabilitation.
It is a special school started by AMC to provide education to mentally challenged children in the age range of 6-16years. The child is evaluated and assessed in clinic by psychologists and psychiatrists before admitting in the school. Progress of the child is regularly discussed with their parents during follow ups. In the class room childrens are grouped as per their mental level and language. They are taught daily activities, self expression, physical and other recreational activities.
It is a multi category vocational training centre started as a part of progressive programme for mentally challenged adolescents and adults. Vocational section of the centre includes carpentry, weaving, dairy products, candle making, sundry crafts. The products produced at the centre are sold to friends, visitors, corporate, public, etc in exhibition cum sale and the money made out of it is paid to the trainees as stipend every month.
It is a sheltered workshop scheme by AMC where products are produced by the disabled children under minimum supervision. Vocations undertaken includes making diyas and candles during diwali season, Paper bags during marriage season, etc. The products produced are sold at various MNC’s as in-company sale.
4. Day care centre:
In this programme AMC’s trained staff provides care & services to children with severe retardation. The individuals at the centre are engaged through occupational therapy that includes paper cutting, watering plants, planning and sanding the wood, etc. Parents are guided on how to take care of these individuals.
Every wednesday professionals consisting of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses from NIMHANS visit the centre where parents bring their children for assessment and follow ups. The visiting team also provide support to teachers, vocational trainers in a systematic manner.
